Why algorithm awareness, why now.

The Initiative is written from inside the work — classrooms, gaming centers, community rooms — not from a lab. What follows is the working thesis, in plain language.

The Thesis

The third-parent problem.

For the first time in history, most young people are being raised alongside a third presence: an algorithm that is in the room longer than any teacher, coach, or mentor, and that optimizes for one thing — behavior. Not development.

Mentors in Philadelphia have started calling this "the third parent." It is community framing — what facilitators are observing on the ground, not a documented research claim. The Initiative treats that observation as the starting point: youth need language, tools, and mentors built specifically for that reality.

What Mentors Do

What algorithms can't do.

Know the name

A mentor knows who the youth is becoming, not just what they clicked.

Interrupt with care

A mentor can pause the loop and ask a better question.

Point somewhere

A mentor points at a next step in the neighborhood, not on the feed.

Repeat

A mentor shows up next week — the compounding piece an algorithm can fake but not do.

What we're seeing.

These are field observations from Open World Gaming Center, Edmonds Middle School, ManUpPHL, and community program rooms — not peer-reviewed claims. Formal outcome reporting is Forthcoming.

  • Youth can name Attention Drift within one session and use the word unprompted after two.
  • The Compass card travels — youth reference it at home, at school, and back at the Center.
  • Mentors report the biggest shift is in the parents once the youth teaches them the framework.
  • Cohort attendance holds when the same mentor shows up in the same room every week.
Open Questions

What we're still answering.

How does fidelity hold across ten sites? What does the framework look like for families whose first language isn't English? How do we measure identity formation without turning it into a rubric that flattens it? The Initiative is looking for research partners on all three.
